Working in Partnership with Foodbanks to Help Those in Need 

The Service

Citizens Advice East Berkshire, Bracknell Foodbank, Crowthorne and Sandhurst Foodbanks and the Trussell Trust have come together to deliver free advice service for people struggling to afford the basics. Operating in Bracknell and Crowthorne the adviser will offer personalised advice and support to help address the underlying causes of the hardship, maximise people’s income, and work with clients to reduce their reliance on crisis support.

The aim of the service is to help people or households facing hardship to maximise their income. Our advisers also help to identify the need for wider advice (such as debt, immigration, or housing, for example) directing people to specialist onward support. By addressing the underlying causes of the hardship, we hope to reduce the need for food bank support.

Crisis Support Assessor

The Assessor will work with colleagues in Citizens Advice East Berkshire and Bracknell and Crowthorne Foodbanks with support from our supervisors, have access to our wealth of resources and are an integral part of the Citizens Advice East Berkshire team. As such, you will be invited to participate in regular briefings, team meetings and training opportunities.

We are advertising for a part-time position to start as soon as possible. This role is predominantly working from both Bracknell, Crowthorne and Sandhurst Foodbanks but some working from Citizens Advice East Berkshire Offices will be expected. We will provide a suitable laptop, telephony, and headset. This role will be for up to an initial 12-month contract with the potential to be extended.

Key Details:

Location: Bracknell & Crowthorne Foodbank Collection Centres (with some attendance at Citizens Advice East Berkshire offices)
Hours: 30 hours per week (worked on different days when Collection Centres are open). Flexible working and part time hours will also be considered for the right candidate.
Salary range:£12.00 per hour (paid monthly)
Type of Contract: One-year fixed term (with strong likelihood of extension)

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Interviewing clients face-to-face at Bracknell and Crowthorne Foodbank Collection Centres, letting the client explain their enquiry and helping the client to set priorities.
  • Finding, interpreting, and communicating the relevant information and exploring options and implications in order that the client can come to a decision.
  • Acting, where necessary, on behalf of the client, negotiating, drafting, or writing letters or making appropriate referrals.
  • Completing clear and accurate case records.
  • Referring clients to further advice, in particular Citizens Advice East Berkshire’s specialist Adviser

Person Specification

  • Experience of supporting customers in a face-to-face environment.
  • Demonstrable working knowledge of one or more of the following areas: Benefits, debt, housing and/or employment.
  • Able to recognise the root causes of problems and participate in taking appropriate action.
  • A commitment to continuous professional development.
  • Attending internal meetings as appropriate.
  • A commitment to the aims and principles of the Citizens Advice service.
  • Being open, approachable, and non-judgmental.
  • Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to sift through information and extract what is relevant.
  • A good level of IT knowledge, literacy and numeracy.
  • An understanding of why confidentiality is important.
  • Be able to input data accurately.
  • Ability and willingness to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to recognise their own limits and boundaries in the role.
  • Enjoy helping people.
  • Have right to work in the UK.
